Swapping AWS drives like your Dad did with hardware

What if you really messed it up, say, after hours of work you log off from your virtual server at AWS, realizing you want to correct just one little thing, and then you learn that you can’t log in again! And all your work before is still unsaved! D’oh!
What now? With real hardware on your desk (or in the data centre) you would pull a few cables, detach the drive you want to access to another computer, repair or save whatever you have to do, then attach it to the original computer, again.
Fortunately, the same is possible with AWS volumes (minus the physics). This blog post by Eric Hammond saved me hours of work. Highly recommended, this method works.
